This Sunday, the day after we celebrate our nation's freedom, we practice forgiveness — and a freedom that runs deeper than any nation can grant. N.T. Wright says forgiveness "unhooks" us from the cycle of bitterness, because to hold a grudge is to let the one who hurt you keep renting space in your future. But, as both Wright and Eugene Peterson remind us, forgiveness never means pretending the wrong didn't matter — it means refusing to let the wound have the last word.
